In the world of addiction and recovery, few stories are as remarkable and inspiring as that of Todd Crandell (LPCC-S LICDC-CS). Armed with the determination to turn his life around and help others fighting similar battles, Crandell has become a celebrated figure in the field of substance abuse counseling and an acclaimed author, known for his powerful books chronicling his journey from addict to IRONMAN.

Crandell's story is one of redemption and transformation. For 13 long years, he battled the demons of drugs and alcohol, watching his life unravel before his very eyes. His relationship with his family and friends suffered greatly, and the dream of a professional hockey career was shattered. Rock bottom seemed unavoidable, until a glimmer of hope emerged from the depths of his despair.

In a quest to rebuild his life, Crandell discovered a newfound passion for extreme physical fitness and personal well-being. He realized that by channeling his once-destructive energies into something positive, he could not only heal himself but also inspire others. And thus, the concept of "The Original Sober Triathlete SM” was born.

Crandell's pursuit of recovery led him to embrace the grueling sport of IRONMAN triathlon - a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike ride, and a full marathon of 26.2 miles. It was an audacious goal, a test of endurance and willpower, mirroring the challenges he faced on his path to sobriety. In 1999, he competed in his first triathlon, and from that moment forward, there was no turning back.

Since then, Crandell has completed over 100 IRONMAN and Ultraman competitions, solidifying his status as a world-class athlete. But his achievements don't end there. Recognizing the power of sharing his story, he became an accomplished author, penning several books that delve into the perils of substance abuse, the importance of prevention, and the essential role of a holistic lifestyle in maintaining sobriety.

Crandell's books, including "From Addict to Ironman," "There's More Than One Way to Get to Cleveland," and "Choices and Consequences," have become invaluable resources for individuals on their own journeys to recovery. Through his writing, he sheds light on the emotional issues and low self-esteem that often lead to addiction and self-harm. His work not only provides guidance but also offers a beacon of hope for those who may have lost their way.

In addition to his literary accomplishments, Crandell runs an intensive outpatient group Racing for Recovery that focuses on addressing the root causes of addiction, such as emotional distress and low self-worth. Using his personal experiences and hard-won knowledge, he empowers individuals to attain and sustain sobriety through a balanced and holistic lifestyle.

Todd Crandell's impact on the recovery community cannot be overstated. Through his unwavering dedication and commitment, he has not only triumphed over his own demons but also extended a helping hand to countless others struggling with addiction. From addict to Ironman, he embodies the power of resilience, determination, and a refusal to let one's past define them.

As we look to the future, we wanted to speak with Todd Crandell on what inspires him to continue to be a force for change, advocating for a world where addiction is replaced with hope and healing. We caught up with him to get more on his story that is a testament to the infinite potential that lies within each of us, reminding us that with the right mindset and unwavering determination, anything is possible. Here is what he had to say!

Speaking with Mr. Crandell

Mr. Crandell, thank you so much for being a force for positivity and change but a lot of people want to know exactly how you got started on this inspiring journey?

After surviving my mom's, uncle’s, and aunt’s suicides, my own 13-year drug addiction and being sober for 8 years, I was featured in our local newspaper which resonated with many people, so I decided to take what I was graciously given in life and give it back by forming the federally approved 501 c 3 nonprofit organization Racing for Recovery™ in 2001.

Wow. That is very powerful. Thank you for being so open and honest about that. Getting help is not an easy step for people who are on the road to recovery. How exactly have you innovated your approach to help others?

Being innovative has always been paramount to myself and Racing for Recovery™. We are the first organization to combine support groups both for those overcoming addiction and their families in one cutting edge support group format. Additionally, we enhanced that innovation and created a pro-bono live stream support group, every Thursday evening at 6:30p EST via our Facebook and YouTube channels, that reaches a global audience. As a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor, I am giving those that are suffering from addiction what I needed and did not receive during my own 13 year addiction and that is help in healing from trauma.  When healing  ensues, a daily opportunity to implement a balanced holistic lifestyle occurs and true sobriety is felt and lived.

With the pandemic, how were you able to provide support to those who most needed it during that time?

We did not miss a beat during covid, but rather enhanced our services through zoom and smaller educational groups. We also opened our fully plant-based kitchen which enhances wellness and reduces sickness.

One of the biggest challenges facing businesses today is keeping up with rapidly evolving technology. How do you stay up to date with the latest technological advances, and how do you determine which technologies are worth investing in?

I surround myself with people who are better than me and allow them to utilize their talents to enhance the Racing for Recovery™ mission. As the founder of this organization, my job and passion are to provide the resources needed to ensure productivity ensues.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your career pursuit and how have you overcome them?

I have endured a great deal of emotional, psychological, physical, and financial hardships but applied my tenacity, commitment, perseverance, and support to overcome all of it to carry on my life's purpose in service to others.

With the growing importance of sustainability, many businesses are looking for ways to reduce their environmental impact. What initiatives has your company undertaken to become more environmentally friendly, and how have these efforts affected your bottom line?

In addition to the common tasks such as energy saving, we have our fully plant-based kitchen and food which are proven to reduce environmental impact more than fossil fuels. I have written the book “DO NO HARM – Discovering the Truth and the Power Behind a Compassionate Lifestyle,” which details this.

Tell us a story about a time when you felt like giving up. People love a good story & this question will help people see the human side of your brand & can serve to make more impactful connections with prospect clients, investors & donors.

Going through bankruptcy two times was very difficult especially when I had a family to take care of. Having said that, I have shown my 4 amazing kids what not giving up on a dream and a life's purpose can do. I believe we all can overcome adversity to achieve the goal and that is what makes the goal even more appreciated when it is accomplished.

Research suggests that successful entrepreneurs often have a unique approach to risk-taking. What's the biggest risk you've taken in your business, and what did you learn from the experience?

I agree 100 percent. There are thousands of great ideas that never come to fruition because the effort and perseverance were not applied to achieve them. I like doing what seems to be impossible and making it a reality. Starting a movement that was innovative since 1935 brought many challenges and I learned to always stay true to what you believe in along the journey of self-betterment.

Thank you for staying committed to the cause and helping others on the road to recovery. Although we have a really good idea of this, we just want to get it officially on the record. What's the overall mission & purpose of your brand?

Our mission is to prevent substance abuse and to provide licensed, educated, and clinical expertise to assist those who are battling self-destructive behaviors to aid them in finding self- love while living a life they never thought was possible. Our culture is caring, supportive, energetic, and innovative and it is my honor to provide that culture at Racing for Recovery™. I encourage our staff to be themselves and let their creativity, passion, and personality shine.

We love this! You truly offer so much to the community.

What are some of the latest products, services, and programs you are offering in 2024? Do you have any mentors that have helped you on your personal road to recovery?

Our latest projects are utilizing our 5 books, innovative support and educational groups, documentaries, feature film, gyms, fully plant-based kitchen, and housing services to the best of our ability to give people an opportunity to live the Racing for Recovery™ slogan “WITH SOBRIETY, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!”.  My biggest mentors are my parents, grandma, and former hockey coach who supported me when I loathed myself and showed me I was worth saving and assisted me in utilizing my positive mindset in making my dream of Racing for Recovery™ a reality.
