A second job for the spy chief

President Trump on Sunday named Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton as the White House AI czar. Clayton is expected to keep his current role and add the new title.

Trump said Clayton will lead a newly formed Super Intelligence Force. The stated aim is to keep the United States ahead in what the White House is calling super intelligence.

Why the portfolio matters

Putting the intelligence chief in charge of an AI push ties a technology race to the security apparatus. That can speed classification and procurement decisions. It can also blur the line between civilian research policy and intelligence priorities.

No staffing chart or budget for the force has been published. The announcement itself is the news: the White House wants one person accountable for both.
