Blaze breaks out in a major Chinese port
At least 20 people were killed and five others were reported missing after a fire broke out on a cargo ship in Qingdao, in China’s Shandong province, local authorities said.
Firefighters and port crews worked to contain the blaze and search compartments of the vessel. Officials have not released a full passenger or crew count while the operation continues.
Investigation focused on cargo and safety systems
Investigators typically examine cargo manifests, electrical systems, and fire-suppression equipment after shipboard fires. Qingdao is one of China’s busiest ports, and officials said they were working to limit disruption to nearby berths.
Families of crew members were being notified as identification work proceeded.
