Justin Bieber’s return to the Coachella stage after a four-year hiatus has sparked a massive debate over music ownership and artist authenticity. During his headline set last weekend, Bieber performed several of his greatest hits by playing the music videos on YouTube and singing along, rather than using a traditional backing track or live band.

The move is being seen as a "loophole" following Bieber's $200 million catalog sale to Hipgnosis in 2023. While he no longer owns the master recordings or publishing rights to his early hits, he still owns his "image and likeness," leading many to believe the YouTube setup was a way to navigate the legal complexities of performing songs he technically sold. Fans remain split, with some calling the performance "iconic and raw" and others labeling it "low-effort" for a headliner.
