Starbucks employees across the U.S. are pushing back against the company’s newly implemented dress code, with hundreds walking off the job in protest. The policy, which went into effect on May 12, requires baristas to wear solid black tops and khaki, black, or blue denim bottoms—an effort by Starbucks to create a more uniform look that highlights its iconic green apron.

However, many workers argue that the change places an unnecessary financial burden on employees, forcing them to purchase new clothing to comply with the rules. Starbucks Workers United, the labor union representing over 10,000 employees, claims that the company failed to negotiate the policy with workers before rolling it out.

The protests have led to walkouts at approximately 100 Starbucks locations nationwide, with union representatives stating that the dress code is just one of many unresolved issues, including staffing shortages and wage concerns. Some employees argue that the company should focus on improving working conditions rather than enforcing stricter uniform policies.

Starbucks, on the other hand, maintains that the dress code is a simple adjustment and has assured employees that they will receive two free black shirts to help ease the transition. The company also insists that the protests have not significantly disrupted store operations.

As tensions between Starbucks and its employees continue to rise, the debate over workplace policies and labor rights remains at the forefront. Whether the company will reconsider its approach or stand firm on its decision remains to be seen.
